Opening the Door to Nature for All

At Lacawac Sanctuary, we believe nature should be for everyone. That’s why we are committed to making the outdoors more accessible for individuals with disabilities—removing barriers and creating opportunities for all people to connect with the healing power of the natural world.

Our Commitment to Accessibility

Nature is not one-size-fits-all. We know that everyone experiences the outdoors differently, and our goal is to ensure that every visitor feels welcomed, supported, and empowered to explore. Through inclusive programming, adaptive equipment, and trained staff, we strive to make Lacawac a place where people of all abilities can learn, heal, and thrive.

Programs and Opportunities

  • Adaptive Outdoor Leadership – Specially designed training and guided experiences help individuals with disabilities build confidence, learn new skills, and enjoy time on the trails.
  • Accessible Education Programs – Hands-on STEM and environmental learning activities are tailored to meet diverse needs and learning styles.
  • Inclusive Public Programs – Family-friendly hikes, workshops, and citizen science opportunities that welcome participants of all abilities.

What We’re Building

We are continuously working to expand accessible trails, improve facilities, and provide adaptive tools so that everyone can enjoy the forests, lakes, and wildlife of Lacawac. Future projects include:

  • Accessible trail enhancements and signage
  • Adaptive seating and gathering spaces
  • Expanded training for staff and volunteers to better support individuals with disabilities
  • All-Terrain Mobility Options – Providing all-terrain wheelchairs and scooters for both children and adults, allowing visitors to navigate rugged trails and experience the sanctuary beyond paved paths.
  • Braille Trail – A dedicated sensory trail with tactile signage and interpretive features designed for visitors who are blind or have low vision, offering a new way to connect with the natural environment.

Why It Matters

The outdoors restores, inspires, and connects us. For individuals with disabilities, time in nature can reduce stress, improve physical health, and strengthen community connections. By opening doors and creating inclusive pathways, Lacawac is helping ensure that the joy and benefits of nature are shared by all.
